Wandering on the Sands

Sometimes you just need to get lost amongst the dunes...

Wandering on the Sands

Postby Thaig » Sun Jul 17, 2011 9:12 pm

A sandy man can be seen wandering the desert, stopping every now and then to examine a plant before moving on. He stops before a large creosote bush and kneels to get a better look at it.

Such a large specimen is rare, even around here. Oh the stories I am sure you could tell of what you have witnessed.

He takes a seat below the bushes shade, staring at the clouds and sky.

((The local landscape is dominated not by creosote , but by mesquite trees, which look very similar, but arent))

Not far away, laying in the sun is a desiccated corpse of an unlucky hiker or immigrant, and a few vultures circle overhead.

Enkindel comes into sight from around a stone outcropping, a backpack dangling from one shoulder. He frowns bemusedly at the corpse, sprawled out on the dusty ground.

"... You're gonna be boring, aren't you?"

The embers inquiry elicits no response from the desiccated man, who doesn't even seem to be breathing.

Enkindel rolls his eyes, and sits down near him, cross legged. He drops his bag in front of himself, and sets about glowering at the corpse. He does not seem to have noticed Thaig.

The corpse lies there, like a corpse.

....

....

A couple more vultures join those circling above.

Enkindel sits there for several minutes more, glaring at the body, before, it seems, getting fed up. He stands up, and goes through some of the scrub nearby, coming back with a twig about the length of his arm. He then returns to where he was sitting, stares at the body a moment longer... and reaches out and pokes it with a stick.

When the corpse is poked, it springs to life and gets a good hold on the ember with dry flaking figers. It's mouth opens and rushes at Enkendle, but stops before biting down.

In a hoarse voice the corpse whispers.
"Ah, you."

He pulls a coin out from his mouth and offers it to the dying ember.

"Put this under your tongue."

Enkindel falls backward as the corpse tackles him, sliding his arms under and between his assailant's, hands going for the throat. His skin cracks everywhere it is visible, and faint wisps of smoke leak from the glow beneath. As the "corpse" arrests its momentum, the ember's hands stop inches away from his neck, and the rents in his skin close up, slowly, as he restrains himself from the combat response. He looks in askance at the coin.

"Why?"

Enkindel doesn't seem all that surprised that an apparently dead body just jumped up an attacked him, all things considered.

The corpse places the coin in the embers hand, and closes it.

"To spend a day in my shoes. Don't worry, it wont kill you." He chuckles.
