Running Speed

Because I am a geek. Just did the math on this.

Each test is 10 minutes and you use Strength + Athletics (instant test, meaning only 1 draw) for sprinting.
Successes - Distance
0 - 0.75 miles
1 - 1 mile
2 - 1.25 miles
3 - 1.5 miles
4 - 1.75 miles
5 - 2 miles

This is based on a 10 minute mile being average and a 6 minute mile being quite good. Following the above logic a 4 minute mile, apparently the women's world record, would require 7 successes.

For long distance foot chases where distance matters you can subtract 0.25 miles from each distance to represent pacing your self enough to make it an extended test*.

Mostly this is for reference. If the subject comes up I won't have to redo my work.

* edit: Foot Chase is Stamina + Athletics, as per the book.

Seems like your speed should have a role in this.
With a heave-hi, lurkin' off the shore!
As wily as a devil with a couple vices more!
And with a ho-hi, from the pilots to the swabs
He's the finest of the pirates and they call him Captain Hobbes!

Your speed score is only for outright sprinting and tactical movement. Not really relevant over miles, baring supernatural powers. It dose play into competitions in that you need successes equal to your opponents speed to knock them out of the race.

Speed is the number of steps you can take per round in combat. When you're trying to chase someone down or avoid being caught you test for it, not go thru endless rounds of combat to see who can take the longer larp steps.

Think of it like old larp where you got 3 steps in combat (5 in werewolf war-form) but if your character was running a race with another you'd throw a physical challenge. We're talking about the physical challenge, not the 3(5) steps.

In that case, I would think it would be more a function of Stamina than Strength.

You think sprinting for 10 minuets is a function of Physical Resistance and not a show of Physical Power?

Yes, champion weight-lifters do not usually win marathons as an example.

In the short term, a sprint for a few blocks, the Physical Power can dominate. For the long stretch, Stamina will keep you going. You might represent this by using a pool based on Physical Power for the first few extended tests up to the Stamina score, then use Stamina for all further challenges

Long distance would still be a Stamina + Athletics extended test, as per the book. I only listed the new/changed rulings.

If we're making a distinction between these rules and a simple function of a character's speed stat, it sounds like that distinction is based on drawing a line where muscle explosivity becomes less useful than endurance. I've run track before, and I can say that the hundred yard dash is a game of legs while the mile is a game of lungs.
