Wiki Captcha

Discussions of any technical geektastic discussion-type thingies related to the administration of these forums that the rest of us nontechnical non-geektastic discussion-type people would find utterly uninteresting.

Y'all have been computer-geek ghettoized.

Someone apparently tried to add about eight or nine links to the wiki after registering. The time between CAPTCHA challenge and response ranges from 30 to 90 seconds, so I believe it to actually be a person. Said person got the math wrong except twice when adding links.

I then rolled back the two updates that did get through and blocked the IP and account.

No reward for the wicked!

Huh, interesting. I've read about spamers using humans to crack captchas via Amazon's mechanical turk.

Oh. Jeff's post totally didn't make sense to me until I read Lucas's post...I was wondering why you rolled back changes and blocked them if you were saying you thought they were legit. I see, I see. Kinda funny they made it through the captcha challenge but was foiled by math :P

They must be beasts.

The wiki captcha challenge has been updated to include the number in parenthesis after the spelled-out number. Current spammer-bots have succeeded several times in solving the captcha, so the inclusion of the additional number to the line is hoped to prevent easy parsing, or to be mistakenly parsed as multiplication.

The security continues to evolve.

out of curiosity, what was wrong with the one where you had to sort the items into the two categories?

Nothing wrong with that Sortables captcha on the forum currently. Unfortunately, the forum and the wiki use different code libraries, so there is no Sortables captcha code I can easily reuse for the wiki. The Math captcha seems to work well enough, though I can see that the spam-bots are getting smarter.

Stats for 2012:

2904 attempts to register and add links
14 attempts to add links
14 created users blocked for blacklisted site or spam attempt

Nothing is perfect, but glad the security is keeping most of the evil ones out!

I envision something akin to watching a bug zapper on a lazy summer evening...
